Why a MPA?
Driven by a passion for equity, I pursued an MPA to gain the skills to analyze, design, and implement policies that create lasting change.
Why the La Follette School?
As the top policy school in Wisconsin, the La Follette School was the clear choice for me. Also, as a proud Badger, I valued the opportunity to continue my education at an institution with a strong reputation in public affairs. The school’s proximity to the state capitol and the access to policymakers, government agencies, and advocacy organizations were key factors in my decision.
Career goals
I aspire to play a critical role in advancing equitable policies and evaluating their effectiveness. My goal is to ensure that policies not only address immediate challenges but also create sustainable, long-term improvements for underserved communities.
How have your La Follette School courses set you on the path to meeting your career goals?
La Follette sharpened my ability to communicate policy issues concisely, craft clear recommendations, and use data-driven analysis to evaluate policy effectiveness. These skills make me a valuable asset in the professional world.
Summer Internship
Yes, I interned at Common Wealth Development as a Community Development Specialist Intern. My work focused on ensuring compliance with HOME and Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) requirements for affordable housing. This experience deepened my understanding of housing policy implementation, regulatory compliance, and the challenges tenants face in accessing stable housing.
Mentors
Professor Kathleen Doherty has greatly influenced my academic and professional journey. Her course, PA 520 Inequality, Race, and Public Policy, provided valuable insights that shaped my approach to policy analysis. Additionally, she wrote me a recommendation for the National Forum for Black Public Administrators (NFBPA), which helped me build a lasting professional network. I will be attending the NFBPA conference in San Francisco this spring to further expand my connections in the field.
Most rewarding experience at the La Follette School
Studying economics deepened my understanding of how economic principles shape policy, strengthening my ability to develop data-driven, equitable solutions.
