You’ve heard his distinctive voice reporting “the biggest stories of our time” in your headphones, now see him live on stage.

Michael Barbaro is the founding host of The New York Times’ hit podcast, The Daily, and an award-winning journalist. On October 20 he will sit down with Susan Webb Yackee, director of the La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, for a rare opportunity to hear from the man behind one of the country’s most popular news podcasts.

“The Daily has helped revolutionized news podcasts and I have long admired Michael for his thoughtfulness and commitment to context and civility,” Yackee says. “These are prized qualities at La Follette, and I am excited to hear his thoughts on a variety of topics of interest for his many fans in Madison and beyond.”

During the Q&A at Shannon Hall in the Memorial Union, Barbaro will reflect on his career in journalism and discuss the challenges and opportunities of covering America during a period of heightened political polarization.

Drawing on years of reporting and interviewing newsmakers across the country, Barbaro will share insights into what issues are shaping public discourse today, how media coverage influences public understanding of policy and government, and whether finding common ground is possible in these turbulent times.

The Daily podcast is considered one of the most popular news podcasts in the world, with more than 3 million listeners. It has been named a top podcast of the year by Time, Entertainment Weekly, The Atlantic, Esquire, Adweek, The New Yorker, and New York Magazine.

Before hosting The Daily, Barbaro was a national political correspondent for The New York Times and host of The Run-Up, a podcast about the 2016 presidential race. Prior to joining The New York Times in 2005, he worked as a reporter for The Washington Post.

This presentation is part of La Follette’s Journalist in Residence and Paul Offner speaker series. It is also made possible by the Kohl Initiative, UW–Madison’s Office of Strategic Communications, and an anonymous donor.
