Why a MIPA?
My military experience in Civil Affairs, working on social and civilian components of conflict and policy implementation, pushed me towards the MIPA program. My firsthand experience with challenges in Eastern Europe led me to an interest in the intersection of economics, policy, and governance in international settings. My experience working with NATO Force Integration Units and other allies taught me the need to learn more about the frameworks that have enabled the status quo and its effectiveness.
Why the La Follette School?
Madison is a wonderful place to live, and my family and I were very excited to move here. The ease of applying to the school was key because of the individual attention from graduate advisors.
Career goals
Retiring from the Army, earning a Ph.D., and beginning a new career focusing on defense and security cooperation.
Advice for prospective La Follette School students
Develop strong quantitative skills early on and take advantage of every opportunity to engage with faculty and alumni and learn from them.
How has the La Follette School changed the way you think about public policy?
My time in school here has reinforced the importance of empirical analysis in policy design and evaluation.
Wisconsin Idea
I was not familiar with the Wisconsin Idea before coming to La Follette. However, as I consider becoming a public policy practitioner or public servant, the sense of obligation or duty to others appeals to me.
Before the La Follette School
I served as the S9 Civil Affairs Officer for the 2/11 Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Airborne at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
Volunteer Activities
Volunteer basketball and football coach.
Anything else…
