Why the La Follette School?
I was initially drawn here by the opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, the small cohort, and the plentiful resources for UW graduate students. I ended up choosing and loving it for the community feel and the support I knew I would get as a person—not just as a student.
Career goals
In my coursework at the La Follette School, I’ve found myself drawn to the legal aspects of policy implementation and regulation, so I plan to begin law school in the fall. Ultimately, I hope to assist people and organizations in navigating complex regulatory environments and guide them to adapt to and influence policies that shape their industries.
Assistantship
I was a Teaching Assistant for POLI SCI 120 (Introduction to Comparative Politics) in the Department of Political Science for three semesters, and I am currently a Project Assistant at La Follette.
As a TA, I attended lectures and taught three discussion section groups a week. I was drawn to this position because the introductory political science courses I took in my freshman year of college shaped the rest of my undergraduate journey, and I wanted to make a positive impact on those now in that position. I loved this opportunity to engage with undergraduate students and interact with my favorite subject in a new dimension.
I was awarded a PA for my second year with my scholarship offer to La Follette and was matched with a professor, Dr. Tana Johnson, whose work aligns with my interests. In this role, I’ve been able to put tools from my La Follette School courses to work and have learned a lot about how international governmental organizations operate. Recently, I’ve been collecting detailed data on interactions between IGOs and non-state actors.
Advice for prospective La Follette School students
Visit the school and tailor your visit to what matters most to you, whether that means sitting in on a class, talking to current students, or speaking to an advisor about how you can develop a course plan that aligns with your goals. Choose a place where you’d feel both supported and challenged, and one where you could see yourself wanting to keep in touch with the people you meet.
La Follette School Student Association (LSSA)
I am currently the Fundraising Coordinator for LSSA. In this role, I organize biannual merchandise sales and events like trivia nights.
