In this report, La Follette students estimate the social and fiscal costs and benefits of placing AEDs at bus stops in Milwaukee County.
Summary
This cost-benefit analysis studies the impact of placing automated external defibrillators (AED) at bus stops throughout Milwaukee County to reduce mortality from cardiac arrest. The analysis considers three policy alternatives that place AEDs at 800, 2,000 or 3,000 bus stops. Each of the alternatives offers positive net benefits. However, to maximize net benefits, the study recommends that the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management places AEDs at 2,000 bus stops, starting with the highest priority areas within the city of Milwaukee.
