In this report, La Follette students help inform disaster relief policies through a review of the research, strategies and programs surrounding natural disaster-caused food insecurity.
Summary
This report aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the strategies and programs used by governments and non-governmental stakeholders to address food insecurity during and following natural disasters. To do so, this report uses a systematic literature review to find and evaluate existing research literature, as well as a stakeholder analysis to compile and sort organizations working on food security, disaster relief, and related fields. This review provides valuable information touching on the unequal burdens faced by vulnerable populations, infrastructure challenges affecting food security, the quality of food, and governmental support frameworks after a disaster. It also helps to identify shared priorities for disaster-relief organizations around serving vulnerable populations and small-scale producers and farmers, mobilizing for immediate post-disaster needs, catalyzing systemic change, and promoting cross-sector collaboration.
