Hnub Xiong’s (MPA’ 24) interest in higher education policy stems from her experiences as a Hmong American and first-generation college student, as well as her involvement with the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE). “As an undergraduate CAE scholar and a graduate program coordinator for their Peer Mentoring Program and the Summer Collegiate Experience, I’ve witnessed the significant impact of student affairs and services on student success,” Xiong says. “I aim to deepen my understanding of how institutions can facilitate educational access and meet diverse needs, ultimately contributing to improving educational equity.” She will begin a PhD program in education policy specializing in higher education at the University of Minnesota in the fall.
Throughout college, Xiong became deeply fascinated by the direct impact of policy on individuals’ lives, particularly those with similar backgrounds to hers. This fueled her desire to contribute to shaping organizational structures and goals, establishing pathways to enhance resources, and making a meaningful impact through policy. Xiong says that the challenges she has faced within educational institutions have inspired her to advocate for structural changes to create pathways for all students to succeed.
“La Follette’s MPA program stood out to me as the ideal opportunity to develop the skills necessary for critically evaluating and analyzing everyday policies while also allowing me to share my experiences and expertise in the classroom,” Xiong says.
After completing a certificate in public policy, Xiong was eager to pursue the accelerated MPA program and apply her academic skills directly to serving the Hmong and broader community. “I am passionate about what I do because of the influence of my parents and grandparents,” Xiong says, “As war refugees, they instilled in me the belief that higher education is crucial for a prosperous life. Their sacrifice and unwavering commitment to supporting me have motivated me significantly.” Xiong aspires to work at an academic institution that focuses on addressing the needs of underserved populations.
