Created to carry forward the values that defined his life and career, the David J. Krings Memorial Scholarship was established this year in honor of La Follette School alumnus David J. Krings MA ’72. A devoted public servant, David worked to improve the systems and communities he served with integrity, fairness, and a deep commitment to the public good.

The scholarship – made possible by a generous gift from his wife, Christine, and daughters Amy, Katrina and Sarah – supports undergraduate students pursuing summer internships in public policy. It reflects David’s enduring belief in the importance of service-driven leadership and his dedication to creating a more just and equitable society.

“Our family is proud to carry on Dave’s legacy of protecting democratic principles and values through this award,” says Christine Krings. “As a dedicated public servant, Dave improved the communities where he worked and lived. We hope that this award will encourage and support La Follette students in their work to advance equitable policies that make life better for all.”

This year, Kunle Ojo, a Kinesiology major pursuing a Health Policy certificate at the La Follette School, was selected as the first Krings Scholar. With a passion for health equity and a commitment to underserved communities, Kunle embodies the values David championed throughout his life. The scholarship will help fund his summer internship at the Cleveland Clinic, a meaningful connection as the Krings family resides in Ohio. Ojo was selected for his academic achievements and his interest in health equity and improving outcomes for underserved communities.

“The David Krings Scholarship has not only allowed me to take new opportunities, but it has also encouraged me to soar to even greater heights,” says Ojo. “Thank you to the David Krings family for all of their support.”

The Krings Scholarship is the latest opportunity provided by the La Follette School for both undergraduate and graduate students to secure enriching summer internships related to public policymaking. Others include the Kohl Scholarship and the Ascendium Scholarship, all of which aim to reduce financial barriers for students pursuing hands-on policy experience. A special thanks to these ongoing partners for supporting the following students: Emma Contreras, Shah Fahad, Caelan Lee, Tali Brown, Amy Liang, Eliana Davis, Michael Glas, Brooke Smith, Macy Goldfarb, Anna Cooper, and Sutton Kreutzfeldt.
