Primary job responsibilities

I conduct independent research in judicial politics, focusing on the socioeconomic effects of judicial intervention in political processes. This work involves designing studies, analyzing data, and contributing to the broader understanding of how judicial actions influence societal and political outcomes. I also serve as a research assistant to professors working on projects related to democratic backsliding and administrative contracts. In this role, I assist with tasks such as literature reviews, data collection and analysis, and co-authoring papers.

Describe a project that best illustrates your job

In Brazil and other countries where millions lack basic conditions for a dignified life, common wisdom suggests that legal institutions can produce social progress via judicial proactivity. However, given that multiple barriers still prevent the poorest citizens from litigating, uneven access to justice might accrue benefits to upper classes, more endowed with resources to litigate. It is likewise unclear whether judicialization diverts blame attribution to the atomized enforcement of rights, alleviating political pressure, or if activist courts alienate structural changes that demand political capital and grassroots support. I leverage a mix of causal inference and machine learning (Large Language Models) to understand how players adjust under court-mandated policy changes and how they affect people’s wellbeing.

How do you use what you learned at La Follette on the job?

In my MIPA program at La Follette, I had the opportunity to take multiple quantitative courses across various departments, including statistics, economics, and mathematics. These courses provided me with a robust foundation in quantitative analysis and research methodologies, which have been invaluable in my PhD studies.

Which experiences and skills in particular helped you get your job?

The strong quantitative foundation I built during my MIPA program enabled me to pursue advanced training in topics like machine learning. Today I can effectively analyze text as data and work with large datasets—capabilities that are critical to my research agenda.

What drew you to the La Follette School?

The MIPA program’s flexibility to explore courses outside the core curriculum was a determinant aspect of my choice. This flexibility allowed me to tailor my academic experience to align with my research interests and career goals.

I considered master’s degrees in economics, but I am happy I chose the interdisciplinary approach of La Follette, which not only strengthened my analytical skills but also equipped me to tackle complex research questions with rigor and confidence.

Most rewarding experience at the La Follette School

My most rewarding experience at the La Follette School was the incredibly supportive and nurturing environment fostered by the faculty. Professors Barnes, Chinn, Pevehouse, Yackee, and Wang went above and beyond to help me succeed — not only by writing letters of recommendation for my PhD applications but also by dedicating countless hours outside of class to offer invaluable advice and guidance. Their mentorship was instrumental in shaping my academic and professional trajectory.

Most challenging experience at the La Follette School

Navigating the initial statistics classes was not a walk in the park. They were demanding and for someone like me (with more of a qualitative background) somewhat intimidating at first. Yet, these challenges were also eye-opening, as they introduced me to a world of rigorous quantitative analysis that became central to my academic and research pursuits.

Why would you recommend the La Follette School?

I would highly recommend the La Follette School to any prospective student because of its exceptional placement record. The school consistently positions its graduates for success across a range of career paths (government, NGOs, and academia).

The program’s curriculum, combined with its supportive faculty and interdisciplinary approach, equips students with the skills and knowledge to excel in their chosen fields. For anyone seeking a master’s degree that offers both flexibility and top-tier outcomes, La Follette is an outstanding choice.

If any La Follette alumni, faculty members, or friends have helped you with your career path, who was it and how did he or she assist?

The faculty are the best! See answer for the most rewarding experience above.

 Anything else?

I found Madison an incredible place to live and study. Summers are magical, with opportunities for sailing, hiking, and spending time at the Terrace, a favorite spot for relaxation and socializing. You still need to study hard for finals? Of course! But studying at the college library with a view of the lake adds an inspiring touch to academic life — an experience that’s hard to replicate elsewhere. Winters are cold (one cannot deny it), but they bring their own charm, with ice skating, skiing, and even ice fishing. Embrace the season!

Favorite book, podcast, app, Madison restaurant …

One of my favorite memories of Madison is enjoying the delicious morning buns at La Brioche — truly a treat I miss dearly. The cozy atmosphere and the incredible pastries made it a perfect way to start the day, adding a little extra joy to my Madison experience. Madison is the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave!
