Like everyone across the globe, Dr. Allison Couture (MPA ’20) had her world turned upside down when COVID-19 struck. However, Couture had a unique vantage point: as a master’s degree student at the La Follette School of Public Affairs and as a practicing doctor.
Incoming University of Wisconsin System President and former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson announced that Tom Loftus (MA ’72) and Scott Neitzel will co-chair his transition team.
With most people confined to their homes due to the coronavirus pandemic, pets often provide much-needed relief from this surreal experience. Pet stores are even considered essential services, while most other businesses are shuttered. La Follette School Professor Dave Weimer and colleagues from the University of Oklahoma and Pennsylvania State University recently calculated the value of statistical dog life (VSDL). According to their article, Monetizing Bowser: A Contingent Valuation of the Statistical Value of Dog Life, U.S. households spend $70 billion annually on pets – with dogs the most common, suggesting that the VSDL might be substantial.
Nineteen graduate students participated in the La Follette School’s third career exploration visit to Chicago in October 2019. Over two days, students visited four employers and learned about career paths during a panel discussion with alumni.
After a multi-stakeholder process and robust conversations over the past several months, La Follette School Director Susan Webb Yackee has announced the School’s new mission, vision, and values.
The La Follette School is hosting an Alumni and Friends Reception in Chicago on Thursday, October 10. Theresa Mintle (MA ’91), interim vice chancellor for public and government affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will offer a few remarks and welcome nearly 30 students and staff to the Windy City.

That includes quantitative analysis and strong writing skills, as well as the ability to interpret data and research findings and then translate them from academia into more plain language – this makes research and learning accessible across different audiences."
