Legislators discuss budget process with students

Students heard about the politics of budgeting from two legislators on April 19 in the La Follette School's public budgeting class taught by professor Don Moynihan.

Assembly members Robin Vos and Mark Pocan talked about the politics of the budget process and the role of the Joint Committee on Finance, the primary legislative decision-making body for the state budget. Vos is committee co-chair on the Joint Committee on Finance, and Pocan has been a senior member.

"This is an example of students gaining first-hand insights from players in the budget process," Moynihan says. "We just went through one of the
most contentious budget debates in Wisconsin history, and the class provides an opportunity to understand what happened."

Other public leaders who spoke in the class include city of Madison budget director David Schmiedicke, city of Milwaukee budget director Mark Nicolini and Wisconsin Legislative Fiscal Bureau director Bob Lang.
