The world’s largest financial newspaper, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun, published an op-ed by La Follette School Professor Menzie Chinn about the causes and possible global impact of the US dollar’s growing strength.
The newspaper, commonly known as The Nikkei, has a daily circulation of more than 3 million. It is the flagship publication of Nikkei, Inc., a global multimedia company based in Tokyo.
Chinn’s op-ed, Origins and Challenges of a Strong Dollar, outlines the chain of events leading to the dollar’s uptick as well as the consequences resulting from the increase.
“The sustained appreciation of the dollar, combined with higher interest rates, has placed tremendous stress on the global economy. And even more stress on the emerging market economies,” Chinn wrote.
The op-ed is translated on Chinn’s Econbrowser blog.
