Baumtrog helps development of Minnesota budget

As financial planning director, Ryan Baumtrog helps keep Minnesota's budget on track.

The 2008 alum helps to manage a team of financial analysts who execute all phases of state budget and finances, including forecasting, cash flow, budget development, managerial reporting, and long-term financial planning and analysis.

"I also coordinate and produce economic and budget forecasts, governor's budget summaries, official statements, fund statements and rating agency presentations," he says.

Baumtrog joined MMB as an executive budget officer after he completed his Master of Public Affairs. In that position he assessed economic development policy initiatives to aid the Minnesota governor's budget development. He also provided financial analysis on legislative proposals during session and worked with state agencies to implement the budget. Baumtrog helped to coordinate American Recovery and Reinvestment Act activities, with a focus on quarterly reporting and transparency issues.

While at the La Follette School, Baumtrog interned with the Wisconsin Legislature and held a project assistantship with the La Follette School and the Menominee Nation. He also served as a co-director of BadgerPals, a student organization linking students with volunteer opportunities with low-income Dane County families. He enrolled at the La Follette School via its accelerated program through which accepted which University of Wisconsin–Madison undergraduates can complete their master's in a fifth year of study.
