La Follette School Professor Menzie Chinn was featured in the Spring 2019 issue of On Wisconsin, published by the Wisconsin Alumni Association. In the article What’s the Tiff about Tarriffs, Chinn addressed the steep tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
“An unintended consequence, Chinn notes, is that American companies relying on these materials — notably within the construction industry — now face higher costs,” the article says. “Overall, Chinn and many trade experts predict a net negative effect on U.S. employment.”
Chinn, a professor of public affairs and economics, studies the empirical and policy aspects of macroeconomic interactions between countries. He is the coauthor with Jeffry Frieden of Lost Decades: The Making of America’s Debt Crisis and the Long Recovery.
In 2017, Chinn presented a paper about global current account imbalances during the influential Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City’s Economic Policy Symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyo. He is coauthor of Econbrowser, a weblog devoted to current macroeconomic issues, and a contributor to EconoFact.
