Alumni and friends are invited to watch the La Follette School team present in a national public policy competition on Saturday, March 23, at American University in Washington, D.C.
Five Fightin' Bobs will present their strategies for combating childhood obesity, using policy and cost-benefit analysis to support their recommendations. The event, at the Mary Graydon Center 4, will open to the public at 1 p.m. with brief remarks from the dean of the American University School of Public Affairs. The first presentation will begin at 1:15 p.m. The La Follette team will go fourth, most likely starting its presentation at approximately 3:45 pm. The final presentation will conclude by 4:45 p.m., and the trophy presentations will be from 5 to 5:30 p.m.
The students are competing against teams from the University of Southern California, University of Washington, American University, University of Arkansas, Georgia Tech and Brown University.
Students Miriam Palmer, Selina Eadie, Andrew Walsh, Norma-Jean Simon and Jiaqi Lu won the contest at the Midwest regional competition for Policy Solutions Challenge USA, held March 1-2 at Ohio State University. Gifts to the La Follette School from alumni and friends are helping to defray the students' travel expenses.
Policy Solutions Challenge USA is a national competition among teams of students from U.S. schools of public policy, public affairs and public administration to develop innovative solutions to the most important policy problems facing the country.
