The Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA) named Raul Leon (MIPA ’07, PhD ’10) as one of its eight Forward under 40 recipients for 2018. Leon is an associate professor of higher education and student affairs at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in Ypsilanti.
After receiving his master’s degree in international public affairs (MIPA) from the La Follette School, Leon completed a doctorate degree in educational leadership and policy analysis (ELPA) at UW–Madison. His work examines strategic diversity management, student success, and the internationalization of higher education in the United States.
At EMU, Leon helped create the Brother-HOOD Initiative, a living and learning community that engages first-year underrepresented male students of color. The award-winning program has helped foster a welcoming campus climate and boost retention rates, and it inspired The SisterHOOD, a similar program for female students.
“My motivation to excel is rooted in pursuing work that impacts my campus and community,” Leon said in a WAA article announcing the award.
