Wisconsin State Legislature – Office of State Rep. Dave Murphy (WI-56)

Internship Location: Madison WI

Organization Type: State Government

Policy Areas: Health, Education, Economy

Interning for State Representative Dave Murphy (WI-56) has been a true pleasure. I have been an intern in his office for two semesters now and have learned so much about state government, public policy, and the legislative process. He is the chair of the Committee on Colleges and Universities and I have been able to be involved in the very interesting work of this committee. The committee oversees the entire Universities of Wisconsin, which includes 13 universities. The committee has addressed timely issues such as free speech, free student press, affirmative action, and transgender student athletes just this past semester alone. It is a very active committee that is not afraid to tackle challenging and, at times, controversial issues. Representative Murphy has served as a fantastic mentor to me and has allowed me to assist on a variety of legislative work for the office. I frequently write summary memos on legislation for him, assist with preparations for committee hearings by organizing bill files, write floor speeches, research bills, and attend committee hearings as well. Representative Murphy has shown me the importance of serving as an advocate for his constituents and standing up for conservative principles. I am deeply thankful for the opportunity to intern in his office and will take the lessons I have learned into my future educational and career endeavors.
