Wisconsin State Legislature

Internship Location: Madison WI

Organization Type: State Government

Policy Areas: Environment, Budget, LGBTQ, and Local Issues

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at the Wisconsin State Legislature. It was exciting to connect the skills I had learned in class to a policy-making entity. Working in a more constituent-centered role, I discovered that my policy research and clear, concise writing skills were utilized the most. However, I still learned a great deal about the structure of the office and the inner workings of creating laws. I was surprised by how interconnected each office was, often going to each other for help, and how staffers tended to work together. The most valuable experience for me was being present in the office as the budget was being created. It was very interesting to see the political discourse, as well as our constituents’ reaction to it. This opportunity let me see into the lives of many different people and gave me a taste of a direct and political government job.
