During my internship at the Wisconsin Public Defender’s Office, I played an important role as a legal assistant, supporting my dedicated team of six attorneys in providing legal representation to indigent clients. My responsibilities included comprehensive case management, where I organized and maintained case files, managed court deadlines, and ensured the timely preparation and filing of legal documents. Engaging directly with clients, I facilitated communication, gathered essential information, and provided updates on case developments. One of the highlights of my experience was the opportunity to attend court hearings and trials, gaining first hand exposure to courtroom procedures and the dynamics of the justice system. I was also able to hone my legal research and writing skills while navigating the intricacies of the legal profession by upholding strict confidentiality standards, adhering to ethical considerations, and managing the emotional aspects of working with clients facing legal challenges. Overall, my internship at the Wisconsin Public Defender’s Office was a transformative experience, equipping me with a diverse skill set and a nuanced understanding of the complexities of public defense work in Wisconsin and our country.
