Internship Location: Madison WI
Organization Type: State Government
Policy Areas: Education, Health, Environment, Public Education, Social Justice
I learned how to operate in an intimate office environment while responding to constituent contacts (email, letter, phone calls, in-person meetings). I used analytical and critical thinking skills in my research on different policy areas, while applying adequate concern for impacted communities, as learned in social welfare through the LaFollette school. The program’s emphasis on policy analysis and its real-world applications allowed me to seamlessly integrate theoretical knowledge into practical scenarios. The most valuable aspect of my La Follette education was the emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving. This allowed me to approach policy with a holistic perspective, considering various facets and stakeholders within the community. The internship presented diverse issues, and the ability to draw from a broad knowledge base was extremely valuable. The most valuable part of the internship was the ability to connect with policy professionals. The networking opportunities and exposure to professionals in the field contributed to my personal and career development. It provided me with a clearer understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities within Wisconsin politics. In addition, I learned of more opportunities within the Capitol that better align with my career goals and I was given support to seek out those opportunities. I would recommend this internship to anyone who is interested in Wisconsin state politics, is an effective writer, and can work independently while taking constructive feedback.
