WI Department of Justice

Internship Location: Madison WI

Organization Type: State Government

Policy Areas: Firearms, Social Justice, Consumer Policy

In my internship, I learned about Wisconsin laws, different government offices and resources, as well as the intricacies of Wisconsin firearm policies within the Firearms Unit. The skills I’ve learned at LaFollette have helped me recognize, primarily, what information was significant to the operations of the office and how advocacy and policy change takes place from constituents to the Department of Justice. I primarily did data entry and reviewed applications for concealed carry licenses, and operated the Department of Justice main phone line. Operating the main line was the most valuable part of this position, because even though you learn to deal with difficult callers, you become very familiar with different government departments, the resources Wisconsin government offers constituents, and the Wisconsin statutes that limit what the government can do. I’d recommend that future students that are interested in policy or law look into this internship, I worked with many other students interested in law. It’s also flexible with school. This internship helped me map out a path to what future education and other areas of law I’d be interested in getting internships as well.
