My internship experience at UW Health gave me a deeper understanding of how data analytics plays a vital role in the healthcare industry. As an Enterprise Analytics Intern, I supported the Productivity and Operational Database teams by analyzing and modeling data for bi-weekly productivity and instructional updates. I used my SQL, Excel, and data visualization skills to ensure the internal data that the teams relied upon was accurate, meaningful, and actionable. I was surprised and impressed by the number of different teams within Information Services that interact and collaborate daily to improve organizational efficiency and performance. The most valuable part of my experience was seeing how data analytics influences UW Health’s operational and strategic decisions. The coursework I completed at La Follette provided me with a strong foundation for this role. My classes in health policy and analytics not only helped me understand how to work with data, but more importantly how to think critically about what the data represents and how to use it to make informed decisions. UW Health is an outstanding organization, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from the professionals on the various teams and contribute to UW Health’s mission. I would recommend this internship to anyone interested in health policy and data-driven decision making. It has provided me with the confidence to pursue a career in healthcare data analytics, where I can help an organization use data to achieve its priorities.
