UnitedHealthcare

Internship Location: Minnetonka, MN

Organization Type: Private Sector

Policy Areas: Health insurance

This summer, I had the opportunity to intern as a regulatory affairs analyst intern at UnitedHealthcare. UnitedHealthcare (UHC) is the largest health insurance company in the country and a leader in the clinical setting. In my role I was tasked with assisting with Mental Health Parity. Learning more about how mental health is covered under health insurance and how our regulators believe that it should be covered helped me understand more about how our government sets its priorities. Learning about and participating in the federal rulemaking process allowed me to have a unique hands-on experience in a complex governing process. I was able to make connections across the company and learn more about roles outside of my specific team. Learning more about other roles in the regulatory and compliance teams allowed me to see how we foster and continue our relationship with our regulators. I was able to understand our many lines of business and how their compliance teams both compare and differ. This taught me how many directions this career path has, even within the same organization. UnitedHealthcare focuses on making sure their interns have a well-rounded experience. By a speaker series and other events, interns get a broad picture of the company, and the space in which they operate. Throughout my internship, I learned more about specific policy areas and broad concepts as a whole. Working at UnitedHealthcare has furthered the necessary skills that I need to be successful in a professional work environment.
