Internship Location: Madison, WI
Organization Type: Higher Education
Policy Areas: Health
As the student health center at UW-Madison, UHS strives to promote, protect, and restore the health and wellbeing of UW-Madison students. I worked in UHS’s Marketing & Health Communications department, which involved creating health education content for students and developing communications plans for health programs. UHS is responsible for reviewing and updating health-related policies on campus, so I also worked on updating UW-Madison’s campus smoking and tobacco policy. This project involved researching tobacco policies at other universities, drafting a policy memo, and collaborating with professional staff members to make edits to the policy. Outside of policy, I was also in charge of creating social media and website content to promote health information and UHS’ services. In particular, much of my work focused on nutrition topics, like working with campus partners to develop materials for eating disorder awareness and National Nutrition Month. I also worked with subject matter experts at UHS on content about topics like sexual assault prevention, mental health promotion, and substance misuse. Working at UHS has allowed me to further explore my interests in public health and health policy and helped me build my research and communication skills. I am very grateful that I’ve gotten the opportunity to support the health and wellbeing of my fellow Badgers through my position at UHS!
