The Borgen Project

Internship Location: Remote

Organization Type: Nonprofit

Policy Areas: Poverty Relief / Humanitarian Work, Foreign Affairs, Social Justice, Lobbying, Education, Economic Development policy

While interning at The Borgen Project as a Political Affairs Intern, I learned a great deal about indirect humanitarian aid and nonprofit work. The Borgen Project is a nonprofit with a mission to reduce global poverty, through lobbying representatives of major countries, providing educational resources, and organizing volunteers to meet with their legislators and mobilize their communities. The organization does not give direct aid to those suffering from poverty but works on a systemic level to ensure lasting change is created for the most people possible. The work I did in my position and the work the organization does sit at the intersection of various of my areas of interest: public policy, foreign affairs, and social justice. Interning at a nonprofit also confirmed for me that I would like to go into a line of work that lets me positively impact people’s lives. Interning at a nonprofit that aims to fight global poverty makes me feel like I am doing something that helps people. I hope to continue working in positions where I feel like I am making a difference in the lives of real people, which is why I was inspired to get into the public policy field to begin with. I think it is important to do work that you are passionate about and that makes you feel like you have a purpose, and I felt that to some degree in this position. I would recommend this position to students who are interested in public policy, political science, and/or foreign affairs.
