Internship Location: Remote
Organization Type: Nonprofit
Policy Areas: Health, Social Justice policy
During my internship at Partners in Hope in Milwaukee, I worked closely with the reentry population, focusing on their health needs, particularly mental health. My responsibilities included developing and implementing health programs, creating educational materials, and providing one-on-one support. This experience allowed me to apply and expand the skills I’ve been learning at La Follette, such as data analysis and program evaluation, to real-world challenges. I gained a comprehensive understanding of health policy and the complexities of addressing systemic barriers faced by underserved communities. I was surprised by the depth of these barriers and the intricacies of coordinating care. The most valuable aspect of the internship was seeing how tailored, empathetic care can significantly impact individuals’ lives. This internship was instrumental in shaping my career aspirations, reinforcing my commitment to health equity, and deepening my interest in global health or community-based health initiatives. I would highly recommend this internship to future students for its unique perspective on health disparities and its practical, impactful work.
