Internship Location: Washington, D.C.
Organization Type: Nonproft Advocacy Organization
Policy Areas: Criminal justice reform and cannabis legalization
NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) is a non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to promoting the legalization of marijuana in the United States. Additionally, the organization is focused on changing the negative narrative and stigma surrounding cannabis use. The organization was founded in 1970 and advocates for the responsible use of marijuana by adults, removing criminal penalties for marijuana use, and regulating marijuana like alcohol. NORML is one of the oldest and most prominent organizations advocating for cannabis legalization and has played a significant role in shaping the national conversation around marijuana policy. As a policy intern, I researched and analyzed data from across the country, promoted research into the potential medical benefits of cannabis, wrote hundreds of letters to be sent to legislators, tracked hundreds of pieces of legislation, and interpreted how marijuana policy impacts public health and social justice. I gained valuable experience in research, advocacy, community engagement, providing evidence-based information, and reducing the stigma associated with cannabis use. My work in tracking legislation and interpreting how marijuana policy impacts other agencies allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding of the complex issues surrounding cannabis legalization. Overall, my internship with NORML taught me the value of advocacy and prepared me for a future public policy and affairs career.
