Milwaukee Justice Center

Internship Location: Milwaukee WI

Organization Type: Nonprofit

Policy Areas:  Social Justice

At the Milwaukee Justice Center, I worked directly with self-represented litigants on family legal issues, including child support, child custody and placement, divorce, and other civil cases. In addition, I assisted in the pardon and expungement clinic. This hands-on experience showed me how administrative burdens and policy design impact people in vulnerable situations. The skills I’ve gained at La Follette in policy analysis, communication, and equity were helpful for my internship. What surprised me most was how rewarding and personal this work can be, even after spending only several hours with a client. I felt that I genuinely impacted people’s lives, which was extremely valuable for me. I would recommend this internship to future students. It’s an opportunity to apply policy skills in a real-world setting and explore careers in civil legal aid, and connect with attorneys.
