Internship Location: Hybrid – Montello, WI
Organization Type: Local Government
Policy Areas: Health Policy & Public Health
Throughout my internship at the Marquette County Health Department, I learned an incredible amount about how public health operates and serves its community by offering various efforts, resources, and opportunities for residents to live their healthiest lives. The lessons I’ve learned at La Follette regarding the collection, organization, and utilization of data and other effective policymaking metrics helped me tremendously in my internship. I was surprised by how wonderful everyone in public health is; everyone is so eager to help and care for others every single day! The most valuable piece I will take away from my internship is the amount of learning I accumulated throughout the summer. All of the intangible lessons and intricacies of local government taught me so much and provided a different perspective than that of a classroom or lecture hall. I would absolutely recommend this internship to future students because you get to collaborate and involve yourself in many different avenues of policy making in a short amount of time. In doing so, you learn more than you’d expect! The internship fortified my desire to work in policy, specifically policy related to health insurance. My experiences in Montello were truly invaluable and the efforts to help others were fulfilling in more ways than I can describe!
