I was a grant writing intern at a grant writing consulting firm called Hiawatha Associates. I greatly expanded my knowledge of funding from a nonprofit’s point of view, as well as how funds are allocated from foundations and local governments. I developed my research and writing skills a lot as well. I also learned a lot about time management, as my internship was remote. I was surprised how difficult it was for me to stay motivated working remotely, but it was definitely a great experience to see what type of career I would want to have in the future. This course helped me set goals for my career, collaborate with other students, and see what opportunities are available in this field of study. I would recommend this internship because you learn a lot about economics and how to write persuasively and concisely, which are both very useful in public policy. Even though I don’t think I would go into grant writing full-time, it was an extremely useful way to understand funding within nonprofits, foundations, and government entities.
