Internship Location: Remote
Organization Type: Nonprofit
Policy Areas: Health policy
I learned so much in this internship about international healthcare and what it takes to care for a patient coming from another country. La Follette has helped me understand the basics of the US healthcare system, what it takes to successfully implement a new policy, and a general overview of insurance. This was really helpful as I worked a lot with insurance companies and data sets this summer where I was able to use analytical skills I learned in my Health Policy classes. I was really surprised by how much the clinic trusted me to work on meaningful projects and take charge in these. I was given a project and was able to complete it from start to finish myself. This was valuable to me because I was able to learn so much more than if I was just watching other people complete the work while only doing small tasks. I would absolutely recommend this internship to others because I was able to learn so much in such a short period of time. I feel that I grew immensely in my data analytic skills while still meeting with patients and hearing their concerns. I have also been able to make so many connections, understand what it takes on the business side to care for an international patient, and learn from some of the brightest and most successful people in their fields. This internship reinforced that I want to continue a career in healthcare administration, but opened my eyes to the possibility of working more on the operations side as a data analyst which I really enjoyed doing this summer.
