Throughout the summer, I was fortunate enough to intern at the City of Madison’s Engineering Division. I worked alongside City Engineering’s Public Information Officer (PIO) who manages the division’s internal and external communications. The core mission of City Engineering is to consistently provide public works projects to the public in a timely and efficient manner. During my time at City Engineering, I regularly met with the division’s engineers who gave me insight into the wide array of projects the division is tasked with, which range from street and path design to sanitary sewer maintenance. As the PIO intern, I was responsible for managing the division’s social media accounts as well as creating content for the division’s blog and annual newsletter. City Engineering’s infrastructure projects are often complex and difficult to understand initially. Through this internship, I learned how to take complex engineering information and effectively communicate it to the public. This position also offered opportunities to network with City staff and local journalists.
