Ahlstrom is a private limited company that specializes in fiber-based specialty materials. My internship with Ahlstrom has taught me a lot about policy creation and occupational safety in general. Things I have learned in class, like what drives the need for policy change and creation, have shown me how the need for policy is displayed in the general labor industry. As an Environmental, Health, and Safety Intern, I was tasked with creating two policy drafts for two different departments, regarding safety concerns. These policies would soon be in effect for all employees and contractors that would enter the facility. Throughout my time in the safety department at Ahlstrom, I learned how the team collaborates in a national setting as well as within different departments at the facility, gained policy writing experience, and connected with a variety of people in different workplace setting. Along with these skills, I gained experience in occupational safety in a manufacturing setting. I would recommend this internship to students with a passion for keeping their coworkers safe, while seeing the direct impact a policy can have on a team. This internship further confirmed my goal of obtaining a MPH. The continued knowledge can help you succeed in the policy world as I was shown by my supervisor.
