I have been working as the Policy Director for the Wisconsin State Senate Minority Leader while finishing up the La Follette program. Many of the skills I have learned throughout the program have been helpful, such as being able to summarize lengthy documents or complex ideas or policies into concise and helpful memos – or better understanding both the political and policy dynamics of a given issue. I would recommend internships or other work experiences within the Wisconsin State Legislature. There is always something interesting happening, the legislators are full-time, as opposed to many states, and the non-partisan service agency staff are some of the best in the country. Having worked in the State Legislature prior to La Follette, and going back to it while being a student, has helped me appreciate certain aspects I hadn’t before.
