Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development

Internship Location: Madison

Organization Type: State Government

Policy Areas: Workforce Policy

This summer, I have been working as a policy and program analyst intern at the Department of Workforce Development’s Division of Employment and Training. In my role, I have completed a wide range of tasks, including conducting research on the non-degree credentials and developing policy recommendations, drafting a 50-page handbook for members of the Governor’s Council on Workforce Investment, and analyzing workforce system performance data using R and Tableau. I have been working in a hybrid setup, going into the office near the Capitol about three times a week, and I have found that the department is a very friendly, supportive workplace. My internship is also part of the State of Wisconsin Student Diversity Internship Program (SWSDIP), and both SWSDIP and DWD have offered enrichment activities throughout the summer to help interns learn more about working in state government. This internship has allowed me to implement learning from La Follette, including lessons learned from Policy Analysis (873), Policy-Making Process (874), and Public Management (878). I am confident that this real-world experience will make my coursework in the second year of my MPA feel much more tangible.
