Embarking on a virtual internship with the U.S. Department of State this semester has been a transformative experience, providing me with a unique and invaluable perspective on the intricacies of policy development, advocacy, and operational challenges within the realm of international disability rights. My role as a policy intern for the Special Advisor on International Disability Rights involved a multifaceted approach, encompassing research, analysis, and active engagement with advisors and policymakers. One of the primary responsibilities during my internship was to support policy advisors in researching countries visited by the Special Advisor on International Disability Rights. This involved developing comprehensive country profiles, deep deep-diving into theoretical materials such as reports from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and publications from Human Rights Watch. Analyzing countries’ responses to global crises, especially the conflict in Gaza, highlighted the practical implications of policy decisions and the operational challenges associated with crisis management. This experience not only drew on theoretical coursework but also required an extensive exploration of studies, reports, and other research materials to understand the far-reaching impact of crises on disabled individuals. As a policy intern, I found myself at the intersection of theory and practice, where the theoretical knowledge gained from La Follette coursework became the foundation for practical application. The global context in which the internship unfolded broadened my perspective on the role of policies in addressing international issues, emphasizing the interconnectedness of policy decisions and their impact on a global scale. I would highly recommend this internship to future students. The experience has been transformative, providing a tangible link between theoretical knowledge and practical application. It offers profound insights into the practicalities of policy work in a dynamic and challenging global landscape, reinforcing the importance of inclusive and adaptive policymaking in addressing complex global challenges. Looking ahead, this internship has profound implications for my ongoing MPA education. It has provided a tangible link between theoretical knowledge and practical application, demonstrating the value of a comprehensive and adaptable education in public administration. The experience has enriched my understanding of policy development and implementation, offering insights into the nuances of global policymaking. The dynamic nature of the internship aligns with the real-world challenges that MPA/MIPA graduates are likely to encounter in their careers. The ability to navigate operational challenges, engage in critical policy analysis, and contribute to inclusive policymaking has become integral to my understanding of the responsibilities that come with a career in public administration.
