Internship Location: Madison WI
Organization Type: State Government
Policy Areas: Education, Health, and Social Policy
During my time interning with a State Senator in the Wisconsin Legislature, I worked on a variety of tasks including writing press releases, responding to constituent inquiries via phone and email, and completing a legislation proposal research project to name a few. The internship allowed me to utilize my policy analysis and data interpretation skills that I learned in the first year of my La Follette program. I used these skills when working on the legislation research project where I proposed legislation that would expand funding for mental health services in schools given the reduced federal funding. The office staff were always willing to answer questions, take the interns to meetings, and introduce the interns to other staff in the building. The internship provided me with valuable connections with people that work in a number of roles in the Capitol. I would highly recommend this internship to La Follette students that are interested in learning more about the legislative process and gaining connections with people that work in a variety of roles in the Capitol. The internship helped me expand my horizons in terms of what jobs I will look for following graduation. I thought I would only be interested in internationally focused jobs coming into the program but interning in the Wisconsin Legislature allowed me to realize that there are opportunities to work in rewarding roles that differ from what I had originally intended.
