Madison Gas & Electric (MGE)

Internship Location: Madison

Organization Type: Private Sector

Policy Areas: Energy policy, environmental policy, housing policy

This summer, I was the Customer Engagement and Community Services Intern at Madison Gas and Electric (MGE), where I worked on projects linking policy research, data analysis, and community engagement. I expanded the Energy Appliance Usage Excel tool, researched energy efficiency, EV adoption, and policies affecting energy incentives, and updated outreach materials to make them clear and accessible. My La Follette coursework, especially in policy analysis, program evaluation, and equity, helped me connect technical work with culturally relevant outreach. What surprised me most was how much MGE invests in the community beyond energy programs, sponsoring events like Juneteenth and Africa Fest to support BIPOC communities. The most valuable part of the internship was combining independent projects with direct engagement at these events. I’d recommend this internship to future students for its balance of research, policy application, and community connection, and it’s helped me see that I want to build a career at the intersection of energy, environmental, and housing policy.
