Common Wealth Development

Internship Location: Remote

Organization Type: Nonprofit

Policy Areas: Election Policy, Campaign Finance Reform

In the summer of 2023, I interned with Common Wealth Development, a nonprofit organization in Madison, WI. This organization focuses on providing safe and stable local housing and promoting economic development through youth and adult workforce development programs. During my time at this organization, I served on the Housing Operations team. This role involved processing HUD-required annual income certifications to ensure residents remain eligible for subsidized housing. In addition, I conducted a service learning project in which I researched the threat of gun violence in one of the neighborhoods we served and how it affected our residents. Talking to residents and other housing property employees furthered my understanding of the public’s needs and how to meet them. Furthermore, working on income certifications gave me the necessary experience in housing policy as I learned more about Housing and Urban development regulations, such as the income requirements given for different types of housing units. I am excited to learn more about housing policy as violence prevention as a conceptual model and apply theoretical and practical applications to my future work in public policy and administration.
