Forgotten Savings: Exploring the Issue of Unclaimed Retirement Accounts

Thursday, January 21, 2021, 12:00pm - 01:00pm
Location:  online

This hour-long virtual targeted research workshop is presented by the Center for Financial Security (CFS) at UW-Madison and the Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds (ETF).

La Follette School Professor J. Michael Collins and Assistant Professor Anita Mukherjee of the Wisconsin School of Business will explore results from a UW-Madison-based study, which quantifies the reasons for these unclaimed retirement accounts. The researchers also will explore how frequently a retirement savings “mistake” of abandoning an account is mitigated by re-claiming the account and the factors that lead to this behavior.

Discussants from the Department of Employee Trust Funds will weigh in with local implications of the unclaimed account phenomenon, leading into a discussion of interventions that could increase the claiming of abandoned accounts. Plan Sponsors will provide comments on the significance of unclaimed retirement accounts, which will be followed by a facilitated question and answer session with the audience and speakers.
