Kurka assesses U.S. efforts in Africa as Army officer

Lieutenant colonel Jeffrey Kurka moved from his position as the department chair of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Army ROTC to the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa in Djibouti as of May 2010.

As the staff assessment officer he determines the degree to which the United States is achieving its objectives in East Africa. "I am primarily responsible for assessing effects of operations for Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Somalia," he says. "I spend the majority of my time traveling throughout the region and writing assessment reports to answer for the investment of resources here. The policy analysis skills I learned at La Follette have proven very valuable while accomplishing these tasks." He graduated from the La Follette School in 2005 with a Master of Public Affairs degree.
