Faculty, alumni participating on Thompson Center panels

La Follette School Professor Susan Yackee and Associate Director Hilary Shager will lead two of the five panel discussions at the opening conference of the Tommy G. Thompson Center on Public Leadership at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Leadership Across the Branches, a daylong public event, is Friday, November 17 at the Fluno Center, 601 University Avenue.

La Follette School alumnus Mark Hadley (MA ’97) also will participate on the panel Leadership in Congress at 9:45 a.m. Joining Hadley, deputy director of the Congressional Budget Office, will be Paul Carver, a former policy adviser to U.S. Rep. David Obey (1969–2011); U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman; and former U.S. Rep. Scott Klug (1991–99).

State Rep. Gordon Hintz (MPA ’01) will participate in the second panel discussion, Leadership in the State Legislature, which Shager will moderate. Other panelists are State Rep. Robin Vos, State Rep. Jim Steineke, and former State Rep. and Ambassador to Norway Tom Loftus.

La Follette School faculty affiliate Mike Wagner, a professor of journalism and mass communication, will moderate the first afternoon session, Public Leadership from the Media’s Perspective. Yackee will lead a panel on Leadership and the Executive Branch, and La Follette faculty affiliate Ryan Owens will lead the panel Leadership and the Courts.Owens, a professor of political science, is activing director of the Thompson Center

The conference is devoted to identifying leadership skills among public officials and disseminated that knowledge. Democratic and Republican lawmakers and other people from the judicial, executive, and legislative branches at the federal and state levels will participate.
